Earth Hour is an international event where all households, commu-
nities and business worldwide are invited to turn off their lights for
one hour at 8.30pm on 28 March 2009 to show that it is possible to
take action on global warming.

Global warming is the most significant threat to life on Earth. One way to slow
the current rate of global warming is for each one of us to make small adjust-
ments to the way we live. Visit the sections on this website to see what you
can do to make a difference.

Earth Hour's objective is to get communities involved in a simple action
- turning off lights - that will make a difference to global warming.

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world's first global election, between Earth and
global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote.

Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming.

WWF is urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against
global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the
people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses
switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a
global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights.
Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome's
Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times
Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion
people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in
history, it is not about what country you're from, but instead, what planet you're
from.

VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual,
every business, and every community.

A call to stand up and take control over the future
of our planet.

Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support
to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is
growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together
we can take control of the future of our planet, for future
generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour,
and join the world for Earth Hour.

On March 28th have friends or family over for a candle lit dinner party
(using beeswax candles).
Use organic or locally produced foods, or serve cold fresh food dishes.
Households

Earth Hour wants each individual to understand that electricity consumption is a direct contributor to global warming and that small actions by every individual can make a big difference. If all households simply turn off unused lighting and appliances on standby at the power point, it will reduce millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas per annum. (See
Reduce Electricity for many other things you can do to reduce your electricity consumption)

Commercial Sector

If the commercial sector turns off lights when buildings aren't in use and combines this action with other cost effective technology, they can reduce lighting emissions significantly, and will save millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Earth Hour aims to show these companies how easy and cost efficient these changes can be through case studies of companies that have already achieved massive reductions in their emissions.

Earth Hour's Objectives are to

Vote for Earth against Global Warming

Get as many individuals, households and businesses as possible to turn off their lights as a symbolic
statement about the greatest contributor to climate change (eg: fossil fuel- fired energy)

Educate the community on the threat of global warming and what each individual can do to make a
difference in their day-to-day activities to reduce their emissions

Get corporate participants to communicate Earth Hour through internal and external channels and
commit to turn off their lights on the night

Provide precedent for an annual event and seek involvement from other cities around the world

Measure the change in your city's greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for a 5% reduction in the year
    following Earth Hour.
