A secure landfill is a strategically designed structure built into or on top of the ground in which rubbish is placed. The intention is to avoid contact with groundwater and the environment.
Although landfills should be the last resort in terms of waste disposal, globally landfilling is still the major waste disposal method. • We should follow the principles of • preventing waste • minimising the amount of waste we produce • reusing what we can • recycling • and only that which we cannot reuse, recycle or compost should make its way to a landfill. • One of the major environmental hazards of landfills is their impact on global warming. • Landfills produce methane gas as waste decomposes under anaerobic (without air) conditions. • Methane gas, a major greenhouse gas, is more potent in its greenhouse effects than CO2. • When a landfill leaks ground water is contaminated. • Waste decomposes very slowly in a landfill whereas a compost heap will decompose quickly. • If you are somewhere where recycling isn't possible and the garbage is going to land up in a landfill then take the lid off plastic bottles - it's easier to squash the container flat which takes up less space in the landfill. • Flatten cans. • Flatten boxes. • Flatten milk containers. |
