Airflights
We know that airplanes emit carbon emissions but we also know that in today's global world people need to fly, and we do so for business and for leisure. • A plane flying with a full capacity of passengers means that the carbon footprint of each passenger is lessened. • If you are going to fly then select an airline that has the most fuel efficient planes. • Select an airline that has a proactive carbon off-setting policy or greening policy. • Do something to offset the carbon emissions of your flight - like plant a tree or make a donation to a tree planting organisation. • Flying first class is fabulous for those who can afford it, but as there is more room per person (less seats and less people in the space) it means that the passenger's carbon footprint is at least double that of a coach passenger. The ratio of carbon emissions per flight to the number of people on board increases. Cars • Arrange lift schemes to work and school. It saves petrol, money and there are less emissions than if each person drives indivi- dually. (It also means fewer cars on our busy roads.) • Drive less kilometres. • Plan your route. • Combine your errands. Plan what you need to do so that you can limit going backwards and forwards. It also means using your time more effectively. • Drive at the speed limit. The faster you go the more fuel you use. • Keep your car serviced and maintained. It means your car will run more efficiently thus using less petrol. • The following can assist in minimising your fuel consumption: • Ensure that your wheel alignment is correct and to specification. • Ensure that your tyre pressure is correct. Check them every time you fill up. • Driving with under inflated tyres increases your fuel consumption and reduces the life of the tyres. • Ensure your brakes are in optimal condition. • Ensure that your hand brake is not binding/dragging. • Check your wheel bearings at every service. • Only put your roof racks or other load carrying devices on when you need them. • Use your engine to slow you down, instead of braking harshly. Look at least 200 meters up ahead to plan your acceleration and braking reactions. • Avoid accelerating harshly. • Avoid accelerating to a robot and then braking harshly to stop. • Don't leave your car's engine idling when you are not driving. • Keep your car windows closed when driving. Open windows create drag that increases fuel consumption by as much as 20%. • Radial-ply tyres offer less rolling resistance and have a longer life than the cross-ply variety. • When you're buying a new car, select the one in your price bracket with the highest fuel efficiency rating. You'll save money on petrol. • Drive a smaller, more fuel efficient vehicle. • Drive a hybrid. • Use public transport. • Ride a bike or walk (even if it's once a week). Walking • If you live close enough and it's safe, walk to your gym instead of driving. • You will have exercised getting there. • You'll save on the electricity consumption of the machine you may have used. • If you like to use the equipment at the gym on a regular basis - then walk once a week instead of using the equipment. The fresh air is also good for you! |
